History of Kaziranga

Dating back to 1905 Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, created the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest with an area of 232sqkm. Over the years, the area was extended and the park was granted an official status by Indian government in 1974. Kaziranga was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique natural environment.

Topography
Spread over an area of around 430sqkm, Kaziranga is bound by Brahmaputra and Mora Diphlu rivers that sometimes cause flooding in the park. The topography consists of exposed sandbars, riverine flood-formed lakes known as beels, and elevated regions known as chapories, that provide shelter for animals during floods.

Vegetation
Thick evergreen & semi-evergreen forests; tall grasses like elephant grass, sugarcanes & spear grass and short grasses cover the expanse of Kaziranga.
