Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Perched high on a ledge above the misty valleys, frothing rivers, & ribbons of waterfalls and swathed in compelling shades of green; lies the foggy town of Cherrapunji. Not so long ago, Cheerapunji was the wettest place on the planet, though now the honor goes to nearby Mawsynram. Its spellbinding panorama is complemented by the vivid culture & traditions of Khasi tribe. Officially known as Sohra, Cherrapunji is a must visit destination in Meghalaya.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge
This 150-year-old wonder was created by the people of Khasi Tribe who manipulate rubber tree roots to grow in a manner as to form a bridge over rivers. A perfect alternative to wooden bridges that decay in rain, these bridges keep strengthening as the roots grow. There are many such root bridges in Meghalaya but the Umshiang Double-Decker Bridge, where the bridges are stacked to form a double-decker, is doubly fascinating. A delightful trek amidst hills and forests takes you to the bridge.

Nohkalikai Falls
Cascading down from a height of over 1100ft, Nohkalikai Falls are one of the tallest waterfalls in India. Around 4 kms from Cheerapunji, these stunning falls amidst lush surroundings are a treat for the senses.

Mawsmai Caves
A handiwork of thousands of years of natural abrasion and underground water channels; Mawsmai Caves are a natural wonder. Speckle with stalactites & stalagmites in various shapes & forms, these caves are a treasure trove of nature’s deep, dark secrets.

The Seven Sisters Falls / Nohsngithiang Falls
Located near Mawsami Village, around 4kms from Cherrapunji, this is a seven-segmented waterfall that is at its gushing best during monsoons. Located at the height of over 1000ft, the falls plunge down the cliff forming a persistent rainbow.
