The foundation of Bhutan lies in Buddhism. The documented history begins around 7th century when the persecuted monks from Tibet fled to Bhutan and later established the Red Hat Sect or the Drukpa Kagyupa School of Buddhism in Bhutan. Bhutan was never colonized but went through various civil wars till 1907 when Ugyen Wangchuck was finally elected as the hereditary ruler of Bhutan. The Wangchuck dynasty still reigns over Bhutan.
