A favorite with the bird watchers, Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary was once the royal hunting ground of the Rajput kings. Also known as Keoladeo Ghana National Park, this UNESCO World Heritage Site lies between the two historical cities of Agra & Jaipur. Often a destination in the famous Golden Triangle circuit, it is one of the finest bird sanctuaries in the world. With around 380 species of birds in this 29 kilometer stretch, Bharatpur is one of the most inviting destinations in the world for ornithologists, bird-watchers and nature lovers. An intriguing mix of marshlands, scrub and grasslands; it’s over 40,000 trees are used for nesting by the birds.

Resident Birds
Local birds like Indian darter, various types of ducks, egrets, quails, herons, kingfishers, storks, cormorants, black & grey francolins, and peacock make Bharatpur their home.
Migratory Birds
Bharatpur is winter home to many migratory birds. The most famous is the Siberian Crane that travels over 6500 kilometers from the Urals in Russia to the warmer climes in India. Other guests to the park include huge Dalmatian Pelicans, Siberian Leaf Warbler, cranes, geese hawks, shanks, stints, wagtails, wheatears, flycatchers, buntings, larks, spoonbills, owls and pipits. ?
Mammals & Other Species
This avian kingdom is also home to various mammals including sambar, chital, fox, striped hyena, golden jackal, black bucks, jungle cat, nilgai and wild boar. Pythons and their archenemy mongoose can be spotted deeper in the forest and if you are lucky, you might spot a duel between the two.
Safari in Keoladeo Ghana National Park
There are various ways to traverse the park. Ride a bicycle or take a cycle rickshaw safari, elephant back safari, or a horse cart safari. Those wishing to penetrate deeper in the forest may opt for a Jeep safari. Boat safari on Kaldeo Lake is also an excellent way to watch the birds up close & personal.
Best Time to Visit
Resident birds are best sighted after the monsoons from August to November and those wishing to spot migratory birds may visit from October to February. The peak season starts at the end of December and continues till February.
