Taj Mahal- Epitome of Love
Taj Mahal is not just a monument but a love poem composed in white marble. Its first glimpse of through the arched doorway is sure to leave you breathless with awe & wonder. Commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1632 in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, it was built over a period of two decades. Ivory white marble in-laid with various precious stones forming intricate patterns, slender Minarets and Persian style gardens are the insignia of Taj. An outstanding mix of Indian, Persian and Islamic architecture; Taj Mahal is often hailed as the most beautiful structure on the planet.
Agra Fort
It may be a bit overshadowed by the grandeur of Taj, but the splendor of Agra Fort is undeniable. Built by Akbar in 1565 primarily as a military structure, this sandstone structure was transformed with marble embellishments into a palace by Shah Jahan. The fort finally became his gilded prison after his son Aurangzeb usurped power. Comprising of many fairy-tale palaces such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal; various audience halls such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and three very beautiful mosques; Agra Fort is the silent testimonial to the glory of the Mughals.
Fatehpur Sikri
This short lived capital of Emperor Akbar, built in 1572 around 40 kilometers from Agra, is a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Akbar built this fortified city after the prophecy of Sikri’s renowned Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chishti came true and Akbar was blessed with a son and heir. This marvel resplendent in red sandstone with sprawling palaces, artistic Jami Masjid and magnificent Buland Darwaza was abandoned in 1585 due to water shortage in the area. This 500 year old ghost town still stands as a faded jewel, its high walls echoing poignant tales of erstwhile glory.
